When I clean, I need tunes. Not just anything will cut it, however. I need the music I listen to to have a few specific characteristics:
First, I need a powerful, driving beat with a relatively fast tempo. Soft ballads are not going to cut it here. The music is here to motivate me and push me to work harder. You wouldn’t run while listening to Celine Dion, why use her to tidy up your apartment?
Next, I need to be able to sing along. It doesn’t matter if I sound good while I do it, I just need to be able to belt out some words. That means a lot of my favorite hardcore and hip-hop tunes won’t cut it. Punk songs that sing really fast are great for a workout, but when I’m straightening up I need lyrics I can keep up with.
Finally, I need a lot of songs, and some variety. I’ve got plenty of genre- and band-specific playlists, and others with various themes (my awesome ladies mix is particularly fantastic). But if I’m making my abode gleam, it’s going to take awhile and I’m going to get bored. Music is what keeps me going, and I need it to do its job.
Keeping those three things in mind, I made my ultimate cleaning playlist. It’s five hours long, so it should cover whatever I’m doing around the house (frankly, if it takes longer than that, I am not doing it in one day anyway). It’s got a mix of punk, pop, and 80s hair bands. It’s got songs I can belt (sorry, neighbors). It’s perfect.
Of course, this is just perfection for me. Everyone will have a different idea of what they need to motivate them. But if you want to give my patented* method a try, check it out below.
